    In 1196, she succeeded her father as suo jure 3rd Countess of Salisbury. There is a story that immediately following her father's death she was imprisoned in a castle in Normandy by one of her paternal uncles who wished to take her title and enormous wealth for himself. According to the legend, Ela was eventually rescued by William Talbot, a knight who had gone to France where he sang ballads under windows in all the castles of Normandy until he received a response from Ela

    Ela has been described as having been "one of the two towering female figures of the mid-13th century", the other one being Margaret de Quincy, Countess of Lincoln.

    Notes:

    John fought in Scotland (1327, 1335) and France (1342-6).[1] He was imprisoned for three months in 1332 for drawing his knife in the presence of the king, in a quarrel with William la Zouche Mortimer.[1]

    John de Grey fought at the Battle of Crecy in France in 1346.[1] This battle was the first in which the longbow played a significant role, changing the nature of warfare from earlier chivalrous attacks to those taking into account the terrain and use of peasant fighters.[4] John was then given permission to crenelate his manors, and was made a Founder Knight of the Garter in 1348.[1]

    John de Grey died 1 sep 1359 at Rotherfield, Oxfordshire.[1] The record of his post mortem inquisition shows the extent of his enormous holdings.[5]

    Thomas Holland was born in Upholand, Lancashire, in 1350.[1] He was the eldest surviving son of Thomas Holland, 1st Earl of Kent, and Joan "The Fair Maid of Kent".[2] His mother was a daughter of Edmund of Woodstock, 1st Earl of Kent, and Margaret Wake. Edmund was in turn a son of Edward I of England and his second Queen consort Marguerite of France, and thus a younger half-brother of Edward II of England.

    His father died in 1360, and later that year, on 28 December, Thomas became Baron Holand. His mother was still Countess of Kent in her own right, and in 1361 she married Edward, the Black Prince, the son of King Edward III.

    A tradition, well established by Shakespeare’s day, has it that they were two of the three knights (the other being Shirley’s colleague, Blount) who, clad in royal armour in order to impersonate the King, successively encountered and fell in single combat under the victorious arm of the earl of Douglas, their deaths being avenged by a fourth champion, Prince Henry.7

    The encounter is immortalised by Shakespeare in his play "Henry IV".

    Sir Thomas Gresley, a name synonymous with wealth and influence in 14th-century Derbyshire, stood as a testament to the power of land and lineage. He was the fortunate heir to the estates of his paternal grandfather, Sir John, and the extensive properties of his mother, Thomasina Wastneys. The Gresleys, originally centered around Drakelow, Linton, Lullington, and Gresley in Derbyshire, expanded their reach through strategic marriages into the Wastneys family, acquiring manors across Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Yorkshire.

    Before his death around 1395, Sir John Gresley entrusted all his estates to his grandson. Thomasina, passing away by July 1405, left her land to Sir Thomas, who then transferred it to a group of distinguished feoffees, including Thomas Langley, the Bishop of Durham and Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas's wife, Margaret, though not an heiress, significantly boosted his annual income.

    Sir Thomas's wealth continued to grow, and by 1436, he was taxed on landed revenues of £200 a year, a conservative estimate given that his Derbyshire property alone was valued at £65 per annum in 1412. He held the right of presentation to the Augustinian priory at Gresley and the parish church of Dalbury in Derbyshire.

    Little is known of Gresley's early life, which was relatively uneventful. However, he later became embroiled in a bitter dispute with the abbot of Burton on Trent, leading to legal interventions and mutual sureties for good behavior. Gresley's influence extended to his return to six Parliaments as a knight of the shire and his frequent appointments to royal commissions. He was a sought-after feoffee-to-uses and arbitrator in private disputes, despite his own disdain for the law.

    Gresley's social standing was further enhanced by the marriages he arranged for his children. His elder son married Elizabeth Clarell, his daughters married into prominent families, and his son Sir John prospered under the patronage of John, Duke of Bedford.

    Sir Thomas's service to the Crown included an annuity from the Duchy of Lancaster and participation in the 1415 French expedition. He also held administrative roles on the duchy's estates and faced occasional legal challenges, including an inquiry into his management of the Walsh estates.

    In his later years, Gresley retired from public life, possibly influenced by controversies surrounding electoral procedures. Despite these issues, he remained a popular arbitrator and litigant. He passed away in September 1445, leaving his estates to his elder son, who only outlived him by five years. Sir Thomas Gresley's life, marked by land acquisition, family alliances, and occasional legal skirmishes, paints a vivid picture of the life of a medieval English nobleman.

    Alice Harcourt was the daughter of Sir Richard Harcourt of Wytham, Berkshire (1416-October 1, 1486) and Edith St. Clare (d. before November 8, 1472). She married William Beselles or Bessiles of Besils Leigh, Berkshire and after his death took a vow of chastity. They had one daughter, Elizabeth. In 1520-21 and again in 1523-26, Alice and two servants lived at the nunnery of Syon, where her granddaughter, Susan Fettiplace, was also a vowess and two other granddaughters, Eleanor Fettiplace and Dorothy Coddington or Goddrington (née Fettiplace), were nuns. In her will, she made alternate burial provisions depending upon whether she was at Syon or Besselsleigh at the time of her death.

    When Cecily was just six months old, both her father, Lord Harington, and grandfather, William Bonville, were executed following the disastrous Battle of Wakefield on 30 December 1460. The Bonvilles, having fought with the Yorkist contingent, were shown no mercy from the victorious troops of Margaret of Anjou (wife of King Henry VI of England), who headed the Lancastrian faction, and were thus swiftly decapitated on the battlefield. Cecily's maternal grandfather, Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury, was also executed after the battle which had been commanded on the Lancastrian side by Henry Beaufort, 3rd Duke of Somerset, while Richard Plantagenet, Duke of York, had led the Yorkists and was consequently slain in the fighting. Margaret of Anjou, Queen of England, was in Scotland at the time raising support for her cause and so had not been present at Wakefield.[5] In less than two months, the Yorkists suffered another major defeat at the Second Battle of St Albans on 17 February 1461, and the Lancastrian army's commander Margaret of Anjou, in an act of vengeance, personally ordered the execution of Cecily's great-grandfather, Baron Bonville, the next day.[6] These executions left Cecily Bonville as the wealthiest heiress in England,[7][8] having inherited numerous estates in the West Country,[9] as well as manors in Lancashire, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, and Cumberland.[10] She succeeded to the title of suo jure 7th Baroness Harington of Aldingham on 30 December 1460,[11] and the title of suo jure 2nd Baroness Bonville on 18 February 1461.
