    • Royalty & Nobility: Duchess of Acquitaine, Queen Consort of England, Queen Consort of France

    Notes:

As Duchess of Aquitaine, Eleanor was the most eligible bride in Europe. Three months after she became duchess, she married King Louis VII of France, son of her guardian, King Louis VI. As Queen of France, she participated in the unsuccessful Second Crusade. Soon afterwards, Eleanor sought an annulment of her marriage,[1] but her request was rejected by Pope Eugene III.[2] However, after the birth of her second daughter Alix, Louis agreed to an annulment, as fifteen years of marriage had not produced a son.[3] The marriage was annulled on 11 March 1152 on the grounds of consanguinity within the fourth degree. Their daughters were declared legitimate and custody was awarded to Louis, while Eleanor's lands were restored to her.

As soon as the annulment was granted, Eleanor became engaged to Henry, Duke of Normandy and Count of Anjou, who became King Henry II of England in 1154. Henry was her third cousin (cousin of the third degree), and eleven years younger. The couple married on 18 May 1152 (Whit Sunday), eight weeks after the annulment of Eleanor's first marriage, in a cathedral in Poitiers, France. Over the next thirteen years, she bore Henry eight children: five sons, three of whom would become kings; and three daughters. However, Henry and Eleanor eventually became estranged. Henry imprisoned her in 1173 for supporting her son Henry's revolt against her husband. She was not released until 6 July 1189, when Henry died and their son ascended the English throne as Richard I.

Now queen dowager, Eleanor acted as regent while Richard went on the Third Crusade; on his return Richard was captured and held prisoner. Eleanor lived well into the reign of her youngest son, John. She outlived all her children except for John and Eleanor.

Eleanor married HENRY, II on 18 May 1152 in Bordeaux, Gironde, Aquitaine, France. II (son of PLANTAGENET, Count of Anjou Geoffroy V and MATILDA, Empress) was born on 5 Mar 1133 in Le Mans, Sarthe, Pays de la Loire, France; died on 6 Jul 1189 in Chinon, Indre-et-Loire, Centre, France. Notes:

John lost the Duchy of Normandy to King Philip II of France, resulting in the collapse of most of the Angevin Empire and contributing to the subsequent growth in power of the Capetian dynasty during the 13th century. The baronial revolt at the end of John's reign led to the sealing of Magna Carta, a document sometimes considered to be an early step in the evolution of the constitution of the United Kingdom.

Contemporary chroniclers were mostly critical of John's performance as king, and his reign has since been the subject of significant debate and periodic revision by historians from the 16th century onwards. Historian Jim Bradbury has summarised the current historical opinion of John's positive qualities, observing that John is today usually considered a "hard-working administrator, an able man, an able general". Nonetheless, modern historians agree that he also had many faults as king, including what historian Ralph Turner describes as "distasteful, even dangerous personality traits", such as pettiness, spitefulness and cruelty.[3] These negative qualities provided extensive material for fiction writers in the Victorian era, and John remains a recurring character within Western popular culture, primarily as a villain in films and stories depicting the Robin Hood legends.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Royalty & Nobility: Princess of England, Queen of Castile and Toledo

    Notes:

In 1170 Eleanor married King Alfonso VIII of Castile in Burgos.[1] Her parents' purpose in arranging the marriage was to secure Aquitaine's Pyrenean border, while Alfonso was seeking an ally in his struggles with Sancho VI of Navarre. In 1177, this led to Henry overseeing arbitration of the border dispute.[8]

Around the year 1200, Alfonso began to claim that the duchy of Gascony was part of Eleanor's dowry, but there is no documented foundation for that claim. It is highly unlikely that Henry II would have parted with so significant a portion of his domains. At most, Gascony may have been pledged as security for the full payment of his daughter's dowry. Her husband went so far on this claim as to invade Gascony in her name in 1205. In 1206, her brother John granted her safe passage to visit him, perhaps to try opening peace negotiations. In 1208, Alfonso yielded on the claim.[9] Decades later, their great-grandson Alfonso X of Castile would claim the duchy on the grounds that her dowry had never been fully paid.

Of all Eleanor of Aquitaine's daughters, her namesake was the only one who was enabled, by political circumstances, to wield the kind of influence her mother had exercised.[10] In her own marriage treaty, and in the first marriage treaty for her daughter Berengaria, Eleanor was given direct control of many lands, towns, and castles throughout the kingdom.[11] She was almost as powerful as Alfonso, who specified in his will in 1204 that she was to rule alongside their son in the event of his death, including taking responsibility for paying his debts and executing his will.[12] It was she who persuaded him to marry their daughter Berengaria to Alfonso IX of León. Troubadours and sages were regularly present in Alfonso VIII's court due to Eleanor's patronage.[13]

Eleanor took particular interest in supporting religious institutions. In 1179, she took responsibility to support and maintain a shrine to St. Thomas Becket in the cathedral of Toledo. She also created and supported the Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas, which served as a refuge and tomb for her family for generations, and its affiliated hospital.[14]

When Alfonso died, Eleanor was reportedly so devastated with grief that she was unable to preside over the burial. Their eldest daughter Berengaria instead performed these honours. Eleanor then went sick and died only twenty-six days after her husband, and was buried at Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas.[15]

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Royalty & Nobility: King of France
    • Name: Saint Louis

    Notes:

Louis IX commonly known as Saint Louis, was King of France, the ninth from the House of Capet, and is a canonized Catholic and Anglican saint.

Louis was crowned in Reims at the age of 12, following the death of his father Louis VIII the Lion, although his mother, Blanche of Castile, ruled the kingdom until he reached maturity. During Louis' childhood, Blanche dealt with the opposition of rebellious vassals and put an end to the Albigensian Crusade which had started 20 years earlier.

As an adult, Louis IX faced recurring conflicts with some of the most-powerful nobles, such as Hugh X of Lusignan and Peter of Dreux. Simultaneously, Henry III of England tried to restore his continental possessions, but was utterly defeated at the battle of Taillebourg. His reign saw the annexation of several provinces, notably Normandy, Maine and Provence.

Louis IX was a reformer and developed French royal justice, in which the king was the supreme judge to whom anyone could appeal to seek the amendment of a judgment. He banned trials by ordeal, tried to prevent the private wars that were plaguing the country, and introduced the presumption of innocence in criminal procedure. To enforce the application of this new legal system, Louis IX created provosts and bailiffs.

Following a vow he made after a serious illness and confirmed after a miraculous cure, Louis IX took an active part in the Seventh and Eighth Crusades. He died from dysentery during the latter crusade, and was succeeded by his son Philip III.

Louis's actions were inspired by Christian zeal and Catholic devotion. He decided to severely punish blasphemy (for which he set the punishment to mutilation of the tongue and lips),[1] gambling, interest-bearing loans and prostitution. He spent exorbitant sums on presumed relics of Christ, for which he built the Sainte-Chapelle, and he expanded the scope of the Inquisition and ordered the burning of Talmuds and other Jewish books. He is the only canonized king of France, and there are consequently many places named after him.

    • Royalty & Nobility: King of England
    • Name: Edward of Caernarfon

    Notes:

Edward was an unusual character by medieval standards. Edward looked the part of a Plantagenet king to perfection. He was tall, athletic, and wildly popular at the beginning of his reign.[18] He rejected most of the traditional pursuits of a king for the period-jousting, hunting and warfare-and instead enjoyed music, poetry and many rural crafts.[19] Furthermore, there is the question of Edward's sexuality in a period when homosexuality of any sort was considered a serious crime, but there is no direct evidence of his sexual orientation. However, contemporary chroniclers made much of his close affinity with a succession of male favourites; some condemned Edward for loving them "beyond measure" and "uniquely", others explicitly referring to an "illicit and sinful union".

    • Royalty & Nobility: English princess, a daughter of King Edward I of England and Queen Eleanor of Castile.
    • Name: Plantagenet; Joan of Acre

    Notes:

Joan of Acre (April 1272 - 23 April 1307) was an English princess, a daughter of King Edward I of England and Queen Eleanor of Castile.[2] The name "Acre" derives from her birthplace in the Holy Land while her parents were on a crusade.

Joan is most notable for the claim that miracles have allegedly taken place at her grave, and for the multiple references to her in literature.

Joan’s burial place has been the cause of some interest and debate. She is interred in the Augustinian priory at Clare, which had been founded by her first husband's ancestors and where many of them were also buried. Allegedly, in 1357, Joan’s daughter, Elizabeth De Burgh, claimed to have “inspected her mother's body and found the corpse to be intact”,[32] which in the eyes of the Roman Catholic Church is an indication of sanctity. This claim was only recorded in a fifteenth-century chronicle, however, and its details are uncertain, especially the statement that her corpse was in such a state of preservation that "when her paps [breasts] were pressed with hands, they rose up again." Some sources further claim that miracles took place at Joan's tomb,[32] but no cause for her beatification or canonization has ever been introduced.

Joan of Acre makes an appearance in Virginia Henley's historical romance Infamous. In the book, Joan, known as Joanna, is described as a promiscuous young princess, vain, shallow and spoiled. In the novel she is only given one daughter, when she historically had eight children. There is no evidence that supports this picture of Joan.[33]

In The Love Knot by Vanessa Alexander, Joan of Acre is an important character. The author portrays a completely different view of the princess from the one in Henley’s novel. The Love Knot tells the story of the love affair between Ralph de Monthermer and Joan of Acre through the discovery of a series of letters the two had written to each other.[34]

Between historians and novelists, Joan has appeared in various texts as either an independent and spirited woman or a spoiled brat. In Lives of the Princesses of England by Mary Anne Everett Green, Joan is portrayed as a “giddy princess” and neglectful mother.[35] Many have agreed to this characterization; however, some authors think there is little evidence to support the assumption that Joan of Acre was a neglectful or uncaring mother

The marriage was known to be particularly close, and Eleanor travelled extensively with her husband. She was with him on the Eighth Crusade, when he was wounded at Acre, but the popular story of her saving his life by sucking out the poison has long been discredited. When she died, near Lincoln, her husband famously ordered a stone cross to be erected at each stopping-place on the journey to London, ending at Charing Cross.

In July 1332 he was ordered to choose 20 archers for the King's expedition to Ireland. He married Maud, who is said to have been a daughter of Thomas,LORD FURNIVALLE. He is said to have died 30 April 1335. In 1343 as widow of John Marmyoun, chivaler, she caused a settlement to be made of the manors of West Tanfield, EastTanfield, Carthorpe, Manfield, and Brough, and other specifiedproperty, including the advowsons of West Tanfield and Wath, of the hospital of St. Giles by Brompton Bridge, and the chantries of West Tanfield, Little Langton, and Wath; to hold to Maud and the heirs male of her body; remainder to John de Grey of Rotherfield and Avice his wife and to John Maryon son of the said John and Alice, and the heirs of the bodies of the said John de Grey and Avice; remainder to the heirs of Avice's body; remainder to John Bernak and Joan his wife, and the heirs of Joan's body; remainder to Avice's right heirs. On 20 Feb 1361/2 John of Gaunt granted alicence in mortmain for the grant of land in the manors of WestTanfield and Carthorpe to certain chaplains to celebrate in the church of West Tanfield for the good of his soul and the souls of John Marmyon and Maude his wife.

John Marmion was a notable figure in the early 14th century, closely associated with Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. He was involved in the controversial execution of Piers Gaveston, a close associate of King Edward II, in 1312, for which he was later pardoned in October of the same year.

John Marmion's political and military involvement continued over the years. He was summoned for military service against the Scots in 1314, and again in 1322 and 1323. In 1322, he received protection for his participation in a campaign in Scotland with the Earl of Richmond and was appointed as a commissioner of array for North Riding. By December 1326, he was summoned to Parliament, and in September 1327, he served on a commission of oyer and terminer in Yorkshire.

In 1327, John and his wife Maud de Furnival, daughter of Lord Hugh de Furnival, made a significant property settlement involving the manors of Tanfield and Carthorpe. In May 1329, John received a three-year protection to go on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. He faced personal challenges in October 1331 when his park at Tanfield was invaded and his deer stolen while he was under the King's protection. In July 1332, he was tasked with selecting archers for the King's expedition to Ireland.

John Marmion married Maud de Furnival, and he is believed to have died on April 30, 1335. After his death, Maud made several property settlements and was involved in religious and charitable activities, including the establishment of chantries. She was commemorated in the parish church of Tanfield for her contributions. John of Gaunt later granted a license for land grants in West Tanfield and Carthorpe to honor the souls of John Marmion and Maud.

John Marmion's life was marked by his military service, his involvement in significant political events of the time, and his contributions to his estate and family.

    Notes:

Margaret de Clare, countess of Gloucester, was the second daughter of Gilbert de Clare and his wife, Joan of Acre. [1] She was reportedly 22 years old at the time of death of her brother Gilbert at Bannockburn in 1314.

She was married first to Piers Gaveston, Knight, Earl of Cornwall, on 1 November 1307 [2] at Berkhamsted. They had one daughter, Joan, [3] who was born on 12 January 1312 in York (she died on 13 January 1325). Piers was executed (beheaded) 19 June 1312, [4] and in September the king endowed the widowed Margaret de Clare with lands valued at 2000 marks per annum.

In 1314, Margaret was co-heiress to her brother, Gilbert de Clare, Knight, Earl of Gloucester and Hertford, by which she inherited the Castle, borough, and lordship of Newport, and manors of Wentlloog and Machen, Monmouthshire, the Castle and manor of Tonbridge, Kent, and manors in many other counties, including Chipping Ongar, Essex, Campden and Thornbury, Gloucestershire, Naseby, Rothwell, and Whiston, Northamptonshire, Rotherhithe, Surrey, etc. [5]

King Edward II was Margaret's uncle. [6]On 28 April 1317, at King's Chapel, Windsor, Berkshire, England, she married her second husband, Hugh Audley the younger. [7] Margaret predeceased her husband, dying on 9 April 1342. [8] At the time of her death she still held several manors in Devon and Newport in Essex as dower lands from her marriage to Gaveston. Her heir was her daughter Margaret, wife of Ralph Stafford, first earl of Stafford, said at the time of her mother's death to be aged, variously, eighteen or twenty years and more.

Margaret was buried at Queenhithe, London.[9] Wealth at death: 2000 marks p.a. in jointure with Hugh Audley; share of Clare lands; £1500 p.a. The burial location referred to by Richardson in both Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry is actually St. Michael Queenhithe, a church in the City of London in what is now Upper Thomas Street. First recorded in the 12th century, the church was destroyed during the Great London Fire of 1666. Rebuilt by famed 17th century architect Sir Christopher Wren, the church was demolished in 1876.

Margaret married AUDLEY, 1st Earl of Gloucester, 1st Baron Audley Hugh on 28 Apr 1317 in King's Chapel, Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, England. Other Events and Attributes:

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Books About: Daughters of Edward I
    • Royalty & Nobility: English princess, a daughter of King Edward I of England and Queen Eleanor of Castile.

Joan married CLARE, Gilbert on 23 Apr 1290 in Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, England. Gilbert (son of CLARE, Richard and LACY, Maud) was born on 2 Sep 1242 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England; died on 7 Dec 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Monmouthshire, Wales. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
