    Notes:

    Sir Thomas Gresley, a name synonymous with wealth and influence in 14th-century Derbyshire, stood as a testament to the power of land and lineage. He was the fortunate heir to the estates of his paternal grandfather, Sir John, and the extensive properties of his mother, Thomasina Wastneys. The Gresleys, originally centered around Drakelow, Linton, Lullington, and Gresley in Derbyshire, expanded their reach through strategic marriages into the Wastneys family, acquiring manors across Staffordshire, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire, and Yorkshire.

    Before his death around 1395, Sir John Gresley entrusted all his estates to his grandson. Thomasina, passing away by July 1405, left her land to Sir Thomas, who then transferred it to a group of distinguished feoffees, including Thomas Langley, the Bishop of Durham and Chancellor of England. Sir Thomas's wife, Margaret, though not an heiress, significantly boosted his annual income.

    Sir Thomas's wealth continued to grow, and by 1436, he was taxed on landed revenues of £200 a year, a conservative estimate given that his Derbyshire property alone was valued at £65 per annum in 1412. He held the right of presentation to the Augustinian priory at Gresley and the parish church of Dalbury in Derbyshire.

    Little is known of Gresley's early life, which was relatively uneventful. However, he later became embroiled in a bitter dispute with the abbot of Burton on Trent, leading to legal interventions and mutual sureties for good behavior. Gresley's influence extended to his return to six Parliaments as a knight of the shire and his frequent appointments to royal commissions. He was a sought-after feoffee-to-uses and arbitrator in private disputes, despite his own disdain for the law.

    Gresley's social standing was further enhanced by the marriages he arranged for his children. His elder son married Elizabeth Clarell, his daughters married into prominent families, and his son Sir John prospered under the patronage of John, Duke of Bedford.

    Sir Thomas's service to the Crown included an annuity from the Duchy of Lancaster and participation in the 1415 French expedition. He also held administrative roles on the duchy's estates and faced occasional legal challenges, including an inquiry into his management of the Walsh estates.

    In his later years, Gresley retired from public life, possibly influenced by controversies surrounding electoral procedures. Despite these issues, he remained a popular arbitrator and litigant. He passed away in September 1445, leaving his estates to his elder son, who only outlived him by five years. Sir Thomas Gresley's life, marked by land acquisition, family alliances, and occasional legal skirmishes, paints a vivid picture of the life of a medieval English nobleman.

    Anne Hutchinson (née Marbury; July 1591 - August 1643) was a Puritan spiritual advisor, religious reformer, and an important participant in the Antinomian Controversy which shook the infant Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638. Her strong religious convictions were at odds with the established Puritan clergy in the Boston area and her popularity and charisma helped create a theological schism that threatened the Puritan religious community in New England. She was eventually tried and convicted, then banished from the colony with many of her supporters.

    Notes:

    The first record of Elder William Wentworth in America is on 4 Jul 1639 when his signature appeared, along with those of 35 others including Reverend John Wheelwright, on the Exeter Combination for government. Rev. Wheelwright had been banished from Massachusetts along with Anne Hutchinson (for his religious views) and had purchased from Native Americans the title to 2 pieces of land in New Hampshire. The settlement was created in 1638 around the lower falls of Swamscott River--what is now Exeter. The original document is preserved among the records of Exeter. The Combination is essentially similar to the "Mayflower Compact" in that it established a cooperative government where none existed.

    William was from Wheelwright's parish in England and probably came to America with him or shortly after. As circumstantial evidence of this, just after Wheelwright's arrival in Boston (26 May 1636) Elder William Wentworth's father (William Sr) sold his property in England and there is no record of either of them in England after that.

    As the Ruling Elder of the First Church in Dover, Elder William was responsible for preaching and serving the needs of the congregation in the absence of the preacher. Due to the geographic distance and difficulty many members had reaching the church held at the meeting house on Dover Neck, Elder William spent the last 40 years or so preaching. He was the first person ever employed by public authority to preach within the city limits of Dover, but he officiated more commonly at Quamphegan (now South Berrwick) which also served the Salmon Falls area. Later in life he also preached in Exeter.

    The tale of how Elder William held off the Indians during the massacre at Cocheco in 1689 is well known. On 28 Jun 1689, Elder William was at Heard's garrison (the frontier post between Portsmouth and Canada), about a mile from his house. That night some of the squaws in the garrison requested to sleep by the kitchen fire (not unusual). But in the middle of the night, the squaws got up and admitted the attacking Indians. A dog barking at them awoke and alerted Elder William, who at 73 years of age managed to somehow push the entering Indians back out, shut the door, and then fall against it to barricade it until help came despite the shots being fired through the door just over his head while he held it. This was the only garrison saved that night. From the others attacked, 23 people were killed and 29 were taken captive.
