John 1 Gilman, the second son of Edward 3Gilman,
Sr., was born in Hingham, Norfolk, England, Janu-
ary 10th, 1624, and was there baptized 23 May, 1626.
came to Exeter before 1650, and immediately became
a prominent citizen. From the first he was concerned
with his brother Edward in mills and lumber. After
Edward was lost at sea in 1653, he inherited much
of the latters' property, and took his place in devel-
oping the resources of the town. He was chosen se-
lectman more than one-half the years between 1650
and 1680: was repeatedly elected commissioner to end
small causes ; and appointed upon committees to care
for the town's interests. He had several handsome
grants of land from the town, and a special right of
a gristmill. In the two years before New Hamp-
shire was emancipated from the Massachusetts gov-
ernment he held the office of associate (judge) of the
old Norfolk county court.

In 1680 Mr. Gilman was made a councillor of the
newly erected province of New Hampshire, and in
1682 a judge of the Court of Pleas; but in 1683 he
was by Governor Cranfield relieved of both offices*.

It is needless to say that his reputation in theprovince
did not suffer by reason of his removal. In 1693 he
was chosen by his townsmen a delegate to the Assem-
bly, and was made Speaker of the House, and again
chosen in 1697.

He married, June 30th. 1657, Elizabeth, daughter
of James Treworgy (sec) (from which came the
popular Christian name ofTrueworthy), and had six
sons and ten daughters, and very numerous descen-
dants. He built the "log house" oppositethe Great
Bridge, which is still standing. He died July 24th,

The oldest house in town is undoubtedly that on
the northerly corner of Water and Clifford Streets,
now owned by Manly W. Darling. It was built by
Councillor John Oilman. He was living in it in 1676,
and there is ground for the belief that it dates back
to 1658. It was constructed of square logs, the upper
story projected a foot or more beyond the lower and
the windows were scarcely more than loopholes. It
was thus completely adapted for the defence of its in-
mates against the attacks of savages, and is known
as a "garrison house." (Picture opp. p. 530.)

upon receipt of the tidings. John Cutt was appointed
president; Martyn, Vaughan and Daniel of Ports-
mouth. GUman of Exeter, Hussey of Hampton, and
Waldron of Dover were named as the council. Sin-
gular to state, they were every one a firm friend of
the Bay Colony. President Cutt lived but a year after
taking office. Waldron succeeded him for a short
term, when there came upon the stage one of the most
restless, strong-willed and zealous representatives of

The original structure was small, and constitutes
the main body of the present house. No doubt ad-
ditions must have been soon made to it, for the first
occupant had sixteen children, all but four of whom
lived to maturity. The wing which protrudes towards
the street was a much later apendage. In this wooden
castle lived Councillor Gilman till his death in 1708.

The place after 178S went into the possession of
Ebenezer Clifford, whoremoved from Kensington to
Exeter about that time. (Bell's Exeter.)

Parents couldn't afford to educate him. He went to live as hired help with Col. Daniel Gilman, a cousin of his father and grandfather of Gov. Gilman . They saw he had potential and decided to educate him. Married Elizabeth Gilman, daughter of Caleb Gilman of Exeter and was a grocer in Exeter. His property was soon lost to a fire. in 1766 moved to a farm in Raymond. 1768 appointed Justice of the Peace by Gov. Wentworth. He was a patriot and as soon as he heard about the battle in Lexington he went to Boston and spent the next 8 years fighting for the cause. Despite not having a law education, in 1776 he was appointed one of the justices in the court of common pleas and held the seat until 1785. In 1785 he was appointed to the Superior Court and held that office until he retired in 1797.


Buried:
interred on the family burying ground at his farm. Inscription: "This modest stone, what few vain marbles can, May truly say, "Here lies an honest man." Calmly he look'd on either world and here Saw nothing to regret, or there, to fear."

During the time of the Revolution, there was one branch of the Gilman family of particular prominence -- the Nicholas Gilmans. At the onset of the Revolution in 1775, Col. Nicholas Gilman was 44 years old, married and the father of eight children. Sons John Taylor Gilman, 22, and Nicholas, 20, were active in various services of the war. Nathaniel, 16, remained at home to help his father. In later years, these three sons would become important to the state in their own right.
The Gilman home, purchased from Nathaniel Ladd in 1752 and enlarged, became the state treasury when Nicholas was appointed treasurer in 1775 by the provincial government. It was here that bills were paid, currency signed to make it legal tender, and receipts kept in a black iron chest. This ponderous strongbox with its huge key remains in the same room today.
Nicholas had been a shipbuilder and merchant before the trials of the emerging new government demanded use of his financial ability. Called the "Brains of the Revolution in New Hampshire," he had chief responsibility for fiscal matters within the state. Although he was in command of the Fourth Regiment of the New Hampshire militia and was at Saratoga in 1777, he took no recorded part in any of the military encounters during this time. His most important duty was serving as Meschech Weare's "right arm" in the civil government of New Hampshire.
Nicholas and Ann Gilman lived to see the end of the war, but died within three weeks of each other in the spring of 1783.
After the alarm of Lexington and Concord, Nicholas' oldest son, John Taylor Gilman, hurried with other Exeter patriots to Cambridge. Although caught up in the Revolutionary fervor of the day, he found time to woo and win the "Belle of Exeter," Deborah Folsom, Nathaniel Folsom's daughter, whom he married on June 13, 1776.
When the Declaration of Independence arrived in Exeter the 16th of July, John Taylor Gilman was selected to read it to the townspeople from the steps of the town house.
The following year John, as state pension agent, compiled registration lists of all the disabled soldiers and certified that they were entitled to aid. He represented New Hampshire at the Continental Congress for one term and became treasurer of the state upon his father's death in 1783. He was elected governor as a Federalist in 1794 and held that post intermittently for a total of 14 years, the longest any man has held this office since Colonial times. He died in 1828 at age 75.
Nicholas (he never was referred to as Nicholas, Jr.), like his father and brother, quickly became one of the leaders of this era. At 20, he entered the army as captain and then became adjutant of the Third Regiment, New Hampshire line. He served only six years, joining Washington's staff in 1778 as senior deputy adjutant general. After the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown, Gilman made an accounting of the men taken prisoners.
When Nicholas was 32, he was elected with John Langdon as a delegate from New Hampshire to the Constitutional Convention of 1787. Gilman was one of the youngest of the 39 signers of the federal Constitution. His draft copy of the proposed Constitution with his marginal notes of amendments now hangs in his boyhood home, the "State Treasury."
Nicholas Gilman's diligence and interest in politics were rewarded when he was elected to the House of Representatives in 1789. Ebenezer was a soldier at Crown Point and Ticonderoga during the Revolutionary War.

Fort Ticonderoga was captured on May 10, 1775, when a small force of Green Mountain Boys led by Ethan Allen and Colonel Benedict Arnold overcame a small British garrison at the fort and looted the personal belongings of the garrison. Cannons and other armaments from the fort were transported to Boston and used to fortify Dorchester Heights and break the standoff at the Siege of Boston.

After seizing Ticonderoga, a small detachment captured the nearby Fort Crown Point on May 11.

Stuart Merrill in his History and Genealogy of the Barnstead Early Families, 1979, states that Ebenezer married Lydia Hoyt in 1779, that in the census of 1790 he included in his family two boys and three girls. He is buried on the farm according to Merrill. Merrill maintains that son James lived on his father's farm, and we know this from the pension information below. The pension file of Ebenezer reads as follows:

"April 6, 1818, Ebenezer Adams of Barnstead, Strafford Co. New Hampshire aged 64 deposed:
that he enlisted Nov. 1775 and served two months; enlisted again in March, 1776, and served four months; in August, 1776, enlisted at New Castle, New Hampshire under Capt. Abraham Perkins, in the New Hampshire Line, where he served as a sergeant for twelve months, and in August, 1777, was discharged at Stillwater, N.Y. He was in the battles of Fort Ann and Skenesboro. The same day Dudley G. Adams of Gilmanton, testified to service in the company commanded by Capt. Abraham Perkins, and Ebenezer Adams, Sergeant, as did Israel Huckins of Barrington, New Hampshire.
William Walker , Noah Robinson and John Kinne, Selectmen, testify to soldier's need of a pension. Claim allowed and Certificate North 16498 was issued Feb. 14, 1820 Act March 18, 1818 for one years service as private.
May 2, 1820 soldier submitted a schedule of his property, but stated that he owned a considerable amount. He mentions a wife, Lydia, aged 62 yrs, a daughter, 30 yrs. of age, and a grandson, 11 yrs. old in his family.

His name was dropped from the rolls on account of property. In 1822 soldier applied for a renewal of pension, stating that when his name was dropped, his creditors foreclosed, and that now he has not more than fifty dollars' worth of property. A number of citizens of the town testify in his behalf, among whom were: James Adams (no relation stated), John Bickford, Abraham and Daniel Bunker, John Daniels, Reverend Enos George, Pastor of the Congregational church in town, of which Ebenezer is a member, Jeremiah Jewett, John and William Nutter, John Peavey and Joseph Tasker.

November 25, 1824, James Adams of Barnstead, New Hampshire testified that he was present when Harrison Hoyt Adams, formerly of Barnstead, but now of Kittery, York County, Maine agreed to pay off what he owed to various persons, among whom were: Ebenezer Adams (who died June 1, 1820), Ebenezer Coe, store-keeper, Jedediah Leighton, Betsy Adams, who nursed the family in several illnesses, Dr. Thomas Shannon of Pittsfield, New Hampshire, Joanna Pease, Nancy Merrill, Charles Hodgdon . Esq., Stephen Watson, as well as Harrison Hoyt Adams and James Adams. Owing to business troubles, H.H. Adams was obliged to sell the farm, and it was bought by James Adams, etc.

Ebenezer Adams was, therefore, restored to the roll; and a certificate with the same number was issued April 1, 1828, according to Acts of March 18, 1818, and May 1, 1820."

During the time of the Revolution, there was one branch of the Gilman family of particular prominence -- the Nicholas Gilmans. At the onset of the Revolution in 1775, Col. Nicholas Gilman was 44 years old, married and the father of eight children. Sons John Taylor Gilman, 22, and Nicholas, 20, were active in various services of the war. Nathaniel, 16, remained at home to help his father. In later years, these three sons would become important to the state in their own right.The Gilman home, purchased from Nathaniel Ladd in 1752 and enlarged, became the state treasury when Nicholas was appointed treasurer in 1775 by the provincial government. It was here that bills were paid, currency signed to make it legal tender, and receipts kept in a black iron chest. This ponderous strongbox with its huge key remains in the same room today.Nicholas had been a shipbuilder and merchant before the trials of the emerging new government demanded use of his financial ability. Called the "Brains of the Revolution in New Hampshire," he had chief responsibility for fiscal matters within the state. Although he was in command of the Fourth Regiment of the New Hampshire militia and was at Saratoga in 1777, he took no recorded part in any of the military encounters during this time. His most important duty was serving as Meschech Weare's "right arm" in the civil government of New Hampshire.Nicholas and Ann Gilman lived to see the end of the war, but died within three weeks of each other in the spring of 1783.After the alarm of Lexington and Concord, Nicholas' oldest son, John Taylor Gilman, hurried with other Exeter patriots to Cambridge. Dudley was descended from Gov. Thomas Dudley and Gov. John
Winthrop of Massachusetts. He was known as "Reformation
John Adams" and was a noted evangelist, serving many pas-
torates in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He died
at Newmarket 30 Sept. 1850.

John Adams was born in Newington, New Hampshire on February 14, 1791 to John Adams and Abigail Coleman Adams. As a teenager Adams converted to Methodism and as a young man he became an itinerant preacher. He was appointed elder of the Bristol Conference in Rhode Island in 1810. In 1820 he married Sarah Sanderson of Watertown, Maine. He was known for his emotional appeals and fiery preaching and remained a popular minister through the 1830s. His preaching career spanned the period of the “Second Great Awakening” and primarily took him throughout the New England area. In the 1840s his preaching style and mental instability caused him increasing difficulties. Since his religious message was often unwelcome, Adams turned to preaching about temperance issues and using his singing voice. Adams died in 1851 after a period of illness.

According to a History of Henry Adams, Joseph C. was born in Barnstead, Feb 25 1815 and was married Oct 29 1839 to Sarah B. Nutter the daughter of James and Hannah (Langley) Nutter. He was a blacksmith in Newburyport for many years.

Joseph's father died in 1820 when he was only 5 years old. In October of 1821 the Strafford Court granted guardianship of Joseph (listed as Josephus in the court papers) and his siblings to his mother. Shortly after, also in1821, there was a notice in the paper that his father's 50 acre farm in Barnstead, NH was being auctioned to pay debts. I have also found the probate records ordering this sale as the estate owed $1200.

It is unknown what his mother may have done then and where they lived, though by 1837 it is presumed they were living in the Newington/Portsmouth area as that is where his sister Sally Ann drowned (she was 17 at the time).

In 1839, Joseph is listed in the city directory at 57 Daniel where he had a blacksmith shop. His mother was also living in town, at 25 Court St., Portsmouth.

Joseph and Sarah married in 1839 and during the 1840 Census they were enumerated, living together, in Portsmouth. It appears that there may have been another Joseph Adams living next to them as neighbors. That is unusual and I don't yet know who it could be.

By the 1850 Census, Joseph and his wife were living in Newburyport, MA and had 5 children, 5 daughters ranging in age from 9 (Sarah F my ancestor) to 2. Ariadna Nutter, Sarah's 24-year old sister was also living with them.

The State of MA held a Census in 1855. Joseph and his family were living in Ward 6 of Newburyport and a son had now been born (he was 3 at this time), so they had 6 children.

In the 1860 Census, Joseph's family was still with him in Newburyport and he is listed as owning $700 in real estate.

MA had another Census in 1865. All his children are still living with him. Joseph's mother had just died the year before, in 1864.

In the 1870 Census, Joseph and Sarah were in their 50s. It notes that he owns real estate valued at $400 and personal property valued at $1000. They have 4 adult children still living with them, no occupations listed for any of them. Annetta 28, Ada (assumed to be Ariadna) 22, and (Joseph) Gilman 18

According to the Municipal Register in Newburyport, MA for 1872, Joseph C. Adams was in the Common Council representing Ward 6. Joseph owned a home and blacksmith shop in 1872 located at 2 Merrimac Court.

In the 1880 Census, Joseph is still living with his wife, his daughter Emma who is 35 and listed as a saleswoman and a granddaughter Nellie M. who is 4. Nellie May's gravestone says she died in 1886.

Joseph's wife Sarah passed away Jan 11 1892. They had been married 53 years.

On the 1900 Census Joseph is enumerated in Newington, NH, with his daughter Sarah and her husband Frederick DeRochemont (my 3rd great grandparents), his daughter Annetta now 57, and Sarah and Fred's children Frederick (23), Harry (32) and Harry's wife Annie and their 3 children Mabel, John, and Lawrence.

In 1907 Joseph was living with his daughter Emily and her husband in Newburyport when he died at the age of 91 from heart disease. Emily did not know her grandmother's (Sally's) maiden name and misreported her grandfather's name as Joseph--though this is understandable as Ebenezer had died in 1820 when Joseph was only 5, long before Emily was born, so Emily never knew her grandfather. The newspaper stated that he had been returned to Newington for burial.

Joseph and Sarah are buried in Newington. Their granddaughter Nellie is buried beside them.

In Sally Ann's death notice it specifically notes that she is a duaghter of the late Ebenezer Adams of Barnstead.

In the article that describes her deat, it says she left her mother, a sister, and several brothers.

Sally Ann's death was by drowning. She was out with friends and had gone to Wood Island (Portsmouth/Newington) in 2 boats. Coming back Sally Ann was in the smaller boat with 2 young men and two other females. It capsized and she sank and drowned. The others barely escaped. Going out she had gone in the larger boat, but coming back she wanted to be in the smaller boat as she said it went faster.

In 1880, Annette was living with her grandfather James Nutter in Newington. He died in 1881 of old age.

Sarah Frances Adams was born in Newburyport, MA on August 9, 1840 (date according to her gravestone), the oldest child of Joseph Adams, a blacksmith, and Sarah Nutter. She had 5 younger sisters and 1 brother, from 2 to12 years younger than her.

She appears on the 1850 Census living in Newburyport with her parents, siblings, and her 24-year-old aunt (her mother's sister).
She appears on the 1855 MA census living with her family, still in Newburyport.

On 20 Mar 1867, Sarah married Frederick William deRochemont of Newington. They were married in Middleton, MA.

By the 1870 Census, Sarah was living in Newington with her husband, their 2 year old son Harry and 8 month old daughter Amelia. Frederick is listed as working as a fire insurance agent.

I don't know if they moved into the house as soon as they were married, but at least later in their marriage they lived in a house on Fox Point Rd.

By the 1880, 3 more children had been born, Windelina, Frederick W. , and Joseph, for a total of 5 children in the family. Harry, at age 12, is the only child listed as attending school. Amelia at age 10 was not. The other children were all too young still. On this Census, Frederick is listed as a farmer. Frederick's younger brother Herbert and his wife Olive lived next door with their 2 year old daughter Charlotte.

Sarah's mother died in 1892. She is buried in the Newington Cemetery.

By 1900, Fred and Sarah were near 60. Harry was married by this time and living with them along with his wife Annie and their 3 children Mabel (4), John (2), and Lawrence (1). Frederick Jr. was still living with them. Sarah's father Joseph C and her sister Annetta had also come to live with them.

In 1903, the Portsmouth Herald noted on May 7 that "Mrs. S. F. deRochemont returned on Tuesday from a visit to Newburyport where she had been the guest of her father J.C. Adams." So by this time, it appears that Joseph had returned to live in Newburyport.

Sarah's father died in 1907. He is buried beside his wife in Newington.

The Portsmouth Daily Herald, on 12 Apr 1909, reported on Sarah's husband's 68th birthday party. It was Easter and his children and grandchildren came to his home to help him celebrate. The article says that he had suffered an accident early in life and had been severely crippled,. but had always played an active role in the community nonetheless. It says Fred was born in Newington in 1841 in the house that his brother was living in when the article was written.

In the 1910 Census Sarah and Fred were living with their son Harry (now 42) and his 6 children, ranging in age from 14-6. Harry's wife Annie had died in childbirth in 1906 and the baby died shortly after. There is also an Elizabeth Haughey, age 24 living with them. The Census says she was from Ireland and is their servant. Fred is still listed as a farmer and Harry as a watchman for the railroad.

In the 1920 Census their were just 2 grandchildren still living with Sarah and Fred, Mabel and Orville. Mabel was 23 by now and working as a teacher.

Fred died in 1926. Sarah died on 10 Dec 1928. Her death certificate says she died of chronic myocarditis. They are buried together in the Newington cemetery.

General Notes:
Son Harry's marriage record says that Sarah was born in Newburyport. Son Frederick's says she was born in Portsmouth. It was more than likely Portsmouth since the Adams genealogy shows the first two children, Sarah and Anetta as being born in Portsmouth. The 1840 census shows a Joseph Adams in Portsmouth, none in Newburyport and the 1850 census shows Joseph C Adams in Newburyport. Sarah was called "Little Grammie" as she was a tiny woman.

In 1862, Sally Ann married James Pickering.

In the 19 May 1903 Portsmouth Herald under the South Eliot section, it notes that, "Joseph Adams, one of the oldest residents of Newburyport, Mass., who has been the guest of his niece Mrs. S.A. Pickering, is en route for home, visiting Dover on the way." This demonstrates that Joseph Adams was Mary Jane Adam's brother and therefore the child of Ebenezer and Sally (Colbath) Adams

George Edwin SHOREY (#525) was born in Lebanon, York Co., ME October 1848. George died 12 August 1864 in Andersonville, GA, at age 15. His body was interred 12 August 1864 in Grave #5405, Andersonville, GA. He answered the call to arms during the Civil War by enlisting on 30 March 1864 as a soldier in the U.S. Army for three years at Concord, N.H. His application states he was born in Rochester. He was described as having dark eyes, brown hair, and dark complexion, and as 5 feet, 4-1/2 inches tall, and 18 years old. He was mustered into Company C of the First regiment of the N.H. Cavalry as a private, commanded by Capt. P.L. Wiggins.
Where he served from his enlistment to June 13 is unknown, but we next find him at White Oak Swamp, Cold Harbor, Va. where he was listed as being captured. One account we have seen listed him as being captured "when his horse failed him," but we have no substantiation. Two days later he was confined at Richmond, VA, and then on June 21 he was transferred to Andersonville, a "hell-hole" for the Yankee prisoners. In a memorandum from prisoner of war records No.8519, citing Vol.4, Pages 307 and 531-2, Vol. 17, p.137 and Vol.3, p.276, it is noted that he died in quarters 12 Aug. of diarrhea. His name was erroneously recorded as "Shoritz" in at least one place.

The New Hampshire Marriage and Death Certificates indicate that Harry DeRochemont was born 18 Jan 1868 to Frederick W and Sarah F (Adams) DeRochemont. They were living in Newington at the time. Harry was the oldest child and by the 1880 Census he had 2 younger sisters and 2 brothers.

On 15 May 1895, Harry married Annie C. McKenzie from Prince Edward Island. He is shown as 27 on his marriage certificate and Annie was 18. It lists him as a farmer. They were married by clergyman Edward Robie in Greenland, NH. Annie's parents were John and Barbara McKenzie. Harry's first two children, Mabel and John were both born in PEI. But we know from newspaper reports and the births of the rest of his children that he was living back in Newington by 1899.

In 1900, Harry and Annie were enumerated in Newington, living with Harry's parents Frederick and Sarah, their three children Mabel (4), John (2), and Lawrence (1), Harry's brother Frederick Jr., his grandfather Joseph Adams, and his aunt Annetta Adams.

Sadly, Annie died in 12 Mar 1906, just 4 days after giving birth to their son Bernard. Tragically, Bernard only lived a few months and also died on 17 Oct 1906. He is buried next to his mother in the Newington Cemetery. She had given birth to three more children before she died, James, Orville, and Harry Jr.

In the 1910 Census, Harry and his 6 children were still living with his parents in Newington. Elizabeth Haughey, a 24-year-old girl from Ireland was living with them as a housekeeper.

On 18 July 1916, Harry married his second wife, also a widow - Edith G. (Bradstreet) Garland. In 1917, the city directory lists them living at 612 Market St., in Portsmouth.

During the 1920 Census, they were living at 412 Hunker St. in Portsmouth. Harry's 4 boys, John, Lawrence, James, and Harry were still living with them, as was Clifton Garland and EB Garland (2 children, presumably Edith's from her first marriage) and Calton Bradstreet (age 25).

Harry's father died in 1926 and then his mother died in 1928.

During the 1930 Census, Harry and Edith were living in Newington, and his daughter Mabel (34 now) was living with them. Edith died in 1934.

During the 1940 Census, Harry was living alone in Newington; his son John W. and 8 grandchildren were living next door. On this Census, Harry indicates he had completed just 5 years of school.

On 8 Jun 1946, at the age of 78, Harry died in Concord. He is buried in the Newington Cemetery near his first wife Annie. J. Verne Wood was the funeral director. Death certificate says he died from a cerebral hemorrage. He had chronic myocarditis and myocardial degeneration. The attending physician was Dr. Everett F. Lombard.

Harry worked as a toll collector.

General Notes:
There was a notice of a marriage of Harry de Rochemont to Lena Fogg in the July 3, 1907 issue of the Portsmouth Herald although I have seen no other record to indicate that Harry had three wives. He was alone, widowed, in the Newington 1940 federal census. He was enumerated as being a mason's helper.

The May 11th 1949 edition of the Portsmouth Herald noted that Winnie Pinkham of Columbia Court was a patient at the Portsmouth Hospital. She died there several days later. Her obituary noted that she had been a resident of Portsmouth for forty years and had been active in PTA and in musical circles. She was a member of the North Congregational Church.

Notes:

"Nana" was the matriarch of the family and was always on hand to help any of her children or grandchildren, though she ruled her home with no nonsense. I (Ernest S. Jr.) remember her as loving and with an ever-present plate of goodies for the children. I remember her in the large bright kitchen in her rocking chair, sewing and talking. The chair was located in a corner between two windows so she could look out either way to see the birds and flowers in the back and side yards. The kitchen had an oil range as well as a gas range, and during the winter months the kitchen was always warm and cozy. Off the kitchen was a pantry with a pass-through into the dining room - which always fascinated me as a child.
During her later years she suffered with angina, and died after one of her feet became infected and gangrene developed. Because of her angina, surgery was impossible for the gangrene. She joined the Advent Christian Church in Lynn 10 June 1906, and was always a very active participant. For years she received the Mothers Day flowers for having the most of her family present at church. This tradition of gathering on Mothers Day lasted for many years with the family gathering at different homes in the afternoon for cookouts and socializing.
