286. William de Oddingeseles alias Doddingeseles.

Writ, 12 May, 23 Edw. I. [1295]

Hertford. Inq. Monday the morrow of Holy Trinity, 23 Edw. I.

Pyritone. A messuage, 200 acres arable, 10 acres meadow, 10 acres pasture, services of bondmen, 10 acres wood, 100s. assised rent, 20s. pleas &c. of court, and a moiety of a water-mill, held of Robert de Pynkeney by doing homage.

Edmund his son, aged 22 and more, is his next heir.

Warwick. Inq. Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 23 Edw. I.

Solyhull and Makstok. The manors, whereof a moiety with the advowsons of the churches, held of Sir Hugh de Oddyngeseles by service of ½ knight's fee, and the other moiety of Solyhull held of Sir Robert de Pynkeny by socage, rendering to him a pair of gilt spurs at Easter, and the other moiety of Makstok held of the same Robert by service of ¼ knight's fee.

Merston and Cotes. Fourteen free tenants who render 36s. 8d. yearly, held of the earl of Oxford for 1/12 knight's fee.

Arley. The advowson of the church held of Sir Hugh de Oddyngeseles.

Buddebrok. A knight's fee held by Theobald de Nevyle and John Hastang, and the said William held that fee of Sir Hugh de Oddyngeseles.

On the day he died Edmund his son was his next heir and of full age, but he is now dead. The said Edmund had four sisters Ida, Ela, Alice and Margaret, the youngest of whom, Margaret, was 18 years of age at Easter last ; they are the next heirs of the tenements aforesaid.

Writ of plenius certiorari on the complaint of Ela late the wife of the said William that the manor of Olton and certain lands &c. in Solihull, whereof she was enfeoffed jointly with her late husband, had been taken into the king's hand on his death, 12 May, 23 Edw. I.

Warwick. Inq. taken at Makstok on Tuesday after Holy Trinity, 23 Edw. I.

Olton and Makstok. The said Ela was enfeoffed jointly with the said William of the manor of Olton, and of tenements in Solyhulle. which are of the fee of Hugh de Oddyngeseles pertainmg to ½ knight's fee which is held from him in Solyhulle and Makstok, and of 12d. yearly rent in Makstok of the fee of Sir Robert de Pynkeneye ; she was in peaceful seisin for four years and a half until the day of the said William's death. The said William and Ela acquired the tenements aforesaid from tenants of the said William, which tenements were previousty charged with 28s. yearly to the said William and his heirs.

Writ of Privy Seal to the treasurer and barons of the exchequer to search the rolls &c. and certify whether the king ought to have the wardship of the heir and lands of William de Oddingeseles, deceased, by reason of the land lately granted by the king to the said William in Ireland, or not, 8 June, 23 Edw. I.

Writ to the escheator, with the consent of John de Clinton, the younger, and Philip Verney, who sue for Ida, Ela, Alice and Margaret, daughters and heirs of the said William before the treasurer &c. of the exchequer, to cause a third part of all the lands &c., which were of the said William to be assigned in dower to Ela, late his wife, having accepted her oath not to marry without the king's licence, 2 July, 23 Edw. I. Endorsed : — ... cos. Hertford, Warwick, Stafford and Rutland.

William married Ela Fitz WALTER, daughter of Sir Walter Fitz ROBERT and Ida de LONGESPÉE. (Ela Fitz WALTER was born in Woodham Walter, Malden, Essex, England and died after 1295.)
