Sarah MOSES was born about 1688 and died after 1754. Born and baptized in Portsmouth, NH. died in Scarborough, Cumberland, ME (?) Received into covenant and baptized at the North Church July 4,1708. Married October 21,1714 Sylvanus Scott of Portsmouth. ( Information received by Jerry Scott, 317 Locust Thorn,Ct. Millersville, MD 21108-1859. 9/16/99). I, Liz Moses, had no other

information on Sarah Moses and Jerry found me on the internet and sent me all the below information)

The first three children of Sylvanus Scott and Sarah Moses are not mentioned in his will. In fact, I am not certain how I first came to believe they existed. I think it may have been a phone conversation with Thomas Hughes, but I cannot find any notes to confirm this. If they did exist, it seems likely that Sarah and Frances died young, since they had younger siblings with the same name. I have found no other references to Amose, either. They certainly left no obvious evidence that they moved to Machias. Correspondence from Thomas Hughes gives 1736 as the birth year for Sylvanus Scott (their son). Robert Romaine cites "Historical Sketches of John Moses, page 104 as stating they moved to Scarborough in 1732. This seems a plausible explanation for the lengthy space between he last two children which appears in my guess.

Research: GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY OF MAINE AND NEW HAMPSHIRE1, page 614; Portsmouth, married October 21,1714 Sarah Moses. Will, 1754-1756, names wife Sarah, sons Samuel, Sylvanus, Daughters, Ruth, widow of George Thompson; Sarah, wife of Joseph Seavy; Elizabeth, wife of Benjamin Foster; Frances, wife of Wooden Foster. Members of his family went to Scarb. and to Machias.

HISTORICAL SKETCHES OF JOHN MOSES: page 104; Sylvanus Scott, and Englishman and a weaver, married 1714, Sarah Moses, daughter of Aaron. The house in which they lived was situated in what is known as "Scott’s Orchard," then a part of the Moses homestead....,March 9,1732, they conveyed to James Moses (her brother) all title they had to her father’s effects, and removed to Scarborough, from thence to Machias, in Maine.

Sylvanus was a weaver in Portsmouth, NH. He resided on a portion of the Moses homefarm with his family. On March 9,1732/33 he deeded to his brother-in-law, James Moses (Adm. of the estate of Aaron Moses and occupant of the homefarm) all right in the estate of Aaron Moses, late of Portsmouth. Sarah (Moses) Scott, wife also released her interest (NH Provincial Deed Book 19:387) The following day, March 10,1732/33, James Moses sold Sylvanus Scott, for 31 pounds, 10 shilllings, a 2 acre lot on the north side of the Road leading from the Plains to Rye, currently Elwyn Road, Portsmouth (Ref. Provincial Deed Book 21:28). The lot is described as "Now fenced and improved by Scott with 1 dwelling house and barn and orchard and garden and fencing." This lot was part of the original 1649 John Moses farm, apparently settled by Sylvanus when he married Sarah Moses and occupied continuously by them from 1714-1733. This deed renders as questionable the theory of Zebina Moses (See next paragraph) that Scotts removed to Scarborough in 1732.

Moses family genealogist, Zebina Moses, postulates that Sylvanus and Sarah moved to Scarborough, ME in 1732, based on the above March 9,1732/33 deed of Sylvanus and Sarah Moses to James Moses, signing off interest in the Moses estate. The author could not have been aware of the 2nd 1732/33 deed where Sylvanus was granted title to his lot and house by James Moses.

The will of Sylvanus Scott of Portsmouth 1754 suggests that Sylvanus and Sarah Moses Scott were resident in Portsmouth at the time of Sylvanus death ca 1756, when his will was proved. Sylvanus signed his will with an autograph signature. He spelled his name "Sylvanus".

Question: Is there any evidence in Scarborough, Me, that Sylvanus Scott resided there prior to his death?

The Scott family retained title to this property until 1783. From about 1763-1783, the property was occupied (rented?) By Joseph Tucker, whose wife, Mary Wallace was a grandaughter of James Moses. On July 24,1783, Sylvanus Scott, Jr. executor for this father’s estate, sold the Scott property to Joseph Tucker, noting that "it has been occupied by Tucker for the past 20 years" (Ref. Rockingham Co., NH deed Vol. 115:178).
