Private Phineas Hodgdon enlisted on December 11, 1776 and served for three years in the Continental Army. He was of the 2nd New Hampshire Regiment, under Colonel Enoch Poor, Captain James Norris's Company, mustering in on April 15, 1777. From December 1777 to April 1778 he served on Command Artillery. May 1778: June 1778 sick at [Watsessing].

In August 1775, Poor's Regiment was designated "The 11th Regiment of Foot." It served in the Siege of Boston until its disbandment. The old 2nd New Hampshire Regiment became the 8th Continental Regiment under Colonel Poor. After the Siege of Boston, it then moved to New York City with the Main Army, served in the Northern Theater, and rejoined the Main Army for the Battles of Trenton and Princeton. It was also involved in the Battles of Hubbardton, Saratoga, Monmouth, the Sullivan Expedition, and the Battle of Yorktown.
