Joseph moved with his family to Chelmsford, Middlesex Co, Mass, in 1656 and lived in the area the rest of his life. He was Baptized  Dec 1, 1656 by the Rev John Fisk at the local church at the age of 6. In 1686 they settled the 500 acres upon the North and East side of the Merrimack River known as "wilderness land", said land lying between Tyng's Pond and the River. There is now a town called Tyngsboro(Middlesex Co) and this land probably lies in that vicinity. Joseph Butterfield's estate was appraised on 22 December 1720

He died in 1720, as his estate was appraised on the Dec. 22, 1720, and inventoried on the same date. The following is filed with the same inventory in the Midx. Reg. Viz:

Honoured Sir:
After my service presented to hour honour, these may certify you, that through age and infirmities I am not able to come to Cambridge: I earnestly desire that Dea. Joshua Fletcher may be put in Administrator upon the estate of my deceased husband, for he is an honest man and one that is capable of managing such a work; which if your honour please to grant or show of your honour will much oblidge you humble servant.
