48. Doiron

48.2 The Family of Jean Douaron
& Marie Anne de Cano of Pisguit

Marriage: ca. 1671

Jean Douaron came to l’Acadie in 1671 on the boat l’Oranger out of La Rochelle. The name Doiron comes from the little town of Oiron in Poitou in the west of France, but by the 1600’s in France, last names had become stabilized for a hundred years. So Jean was not likely the one who put the D’ in front of Oiron. That probably happened generations before.

…It is known that the family names of the Acadians were common in the small area around Oiron; Trahan, Landry, LeBlanc, Hebert, Giroir and Thibodeaux are all found within walking distance.

When this group came to Acadie, their customs and culture stayed the same. This indicates that they were already familiar to each other as a group in France. It is interesting, looking at a 1600’s map, that Poitou is between the main part of France and the area known as Bretagne. There are evidences of Bretagne culture among the Acadians, and the settlement of Poitou in the 1500’s was more from Bretagne than from central France. The Bretons were a most prolific people, much like Acadians are; a group of Bretons settling in Poitou would likely stick together, although they would use French rather than the Bretagne language after a few generations.

There is some doubt about where Jean Doiron and Marie-Anne Canol were married. But the time of the birth of their first child indicates that they were married in France. The name Canol never appears again in the Acadian society, so Marie-Anne may not have been a member of the 1600’s Acadian culture group. By 1755 there were quite a few Doirons in Acadia.[1]

Jean Doiron is believed to have arrived in Acadia around 1660 but he appears to have settled originally at Pentagouet (Castine, Maine). He later moved to Port Royal where, according to the 1686 census, he seems to have been newly settled there.

After his second marriage, around 1692, he established himself with his family at Pisiguit (Windsor, N.S.) where his presence is recorded in 1693. His family numbered 19 children. They remained in their community with the exception of Pierre who removed to Beaubassin (possibly at Menoudie), and of Noel who went to Cobequid.

Jean died around 1735 and, therefore, did not undergo the ordeal of the Deportation. However, the families of his children and grandchildren were dispersed in America and in Europe.[2]
